The 2017-2018 WONCA Asia-Pacific Region Five Star Doctor Award has been awarded to Professor Tai-Yuan Chiu, Member of the Legislative Yuan. Dr. Chiu is the first Taiwanese to receive this honor. WONCA (The World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians) is the leading international non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of family medicine and as an advocate for its constituents engages with other world bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO). Also known as the WONCA’s Award of Excellence in Health Care, the award has a rigorous selection process based on each candidate’s contributions in five categories: as a Care Provider, a Decision Maker, a Communicator, a Community Leader, and a Team Member. As the recipient of this award, Dr. Chiu will represent WONCA Asia-Pacific region as a nominee for the WONCA Five Star Doctor Award next year.
Professor Chiu is a pioneer in family medicine and community medicine and a community organizer and visionary leader and for the betterment of health care in Taiwan. He is Professor of Medicine and a former senior director of the Medical Center of National Taiwan University. Currently, he is the President of the Taiwan Medical Association, the largest professional organization for physicians in Taiwan with more than 46,000 members. For the past thirty years, Dr. Chiu has dedicated his time to the service of the medical professionals and humanitarian missions in Taiwan. Dr. Chiu’s research insight and administrative experience in the family medicine, community medicine, preventive medicine, and health care systems was instrumental in the reshaping of our public health policies, improving the health care delivery system, and sharing our accomplishments and experience in health care to the world.
